SPRING MILLS — The Clearfield football trekked to Penns Valley Friday night in search of a much-needed victory, and that's just what the Bison got — although it didn't come easy as they held off a late rally by the Rams to pull out a hard-fought 21-19 victory to end a three-game losing skid.
Clearfield (2-4) used a strong first-half effort to grab control, as the Bison found the end zone three times — twice in the second quarter — to take a 21-7 lead to the break. The Bison never scored again, though, while the host Rams scored twice in the fourth.
However, Penns Valley missed the extra point on the first of those fourth quarter scored, then the Clearfield defense came up with a huge stop on a two-point try on the second to preserve its 21-19 victory.
Clearfield opened the scoring in the first quarter on a four-yard touchdown run by Ryan Ludwig. Tucker Scott booted the extra point to make it 7-0, but that lead proved to be short-lived as Penns Valley's Spencer Althouse returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. Althouse then booted the extra point to even the score at 7-7.
The Bison then put together two nice scoring drives in the second quarter around a Penns Valley turnover to grab a 21-7. Freshman quarterback Dylan Foust capped both of those drives with touchdown passes.
The first of those scores came when Foust made a perfect throw to Spencer Rosinsky, dropping a pass in between two defenders as he hit Rosinsky on the run from about 30 yards out for the score. Scott's kick made it 14-7.
Penns Valley (1-5) tried to answer back and drove deep in to Clearfield territory before turning the ball over on a fumble which the Bison recovered near its own 23-yard line.
Clearfield promptly marched down the field before Elijah Glunt hit paydirt from 23 yards out with 31 seconds to play in the half. Foust hit Glunt on a slant route on the play, and the Bison did the rest as Glunt faked out a defender before splitting two or three others to find the end zone. Scott's third PAT put the Bison up 21-7 at the break.
Glunt's score proved to be the difference in the game, as the Bison fought off Penns Valley's fourth-quarter comeback bid.
Foust completed 14 of 17 passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns in the win. Rosinsky led the receivers on this night, as he hauled in four catches for 80 yards and a score. Glunt had seven grans for 50 yards and the eventual game-winning touchdown, while Curtis Putt had three catches for 43 yards.
Ludwig led the Bison ground game with 19 carries for 81 yards and that opening score. Foust had eight carries for 27 yards, while Noah Troxell had three totes for 22 yards.
