Joe Henry
Caption reads: " Grantland Rice chats with Army's rugged
Joe Henry. Rice picked Henry, from Clearfield, Pa, as one of
the first-team guards on the 1948 Look All-America (team) "
( Grantland Rice (1880-1954) was the "Dean of American Sportswriters" of his era, and is famous for coining the
term "the Four Horsemen of Notre Dame". "Look" was a national magazine, now long defunct, which coincidentally selected Clearfield as an "All America City" in 1967. )
Dale Kuhns
Dale Kuhns played football at C.H.S., graduating in
1958, and at the United States Military Academy at
West Point. He is one of the Army Cadets* pictured
in the large photo displayed in the main entrance
of the school.
His father, Harold "Prof" Kuhns, was the longtime
Band and musical director here at Clearfield High
in the 1950's & 60's.
* In 1959, Clearfield was represented at West Point by six cadets. While not verified as a record, Academy officials at the time agreed that it was highly unusual for any town, and especially one the size of Clearfield, to have so many.
Along with Dale Kuhns, the cadets were Bill Chase, Dean Learish, David Lewis, Frederick Plummer & Joseph Sayers.
cf.org hopes to be able to post a copy of this photo soon.

The above photos and artifacts are only the items that reside in the Tropy Case at CHS and of course are
only a small portion of Clearfield Bison Football history. It is our intention over the next weeks and months to research more items by going through old Bison yearbooks and any other sources we can find.
And, as always, we would welcome any information or old photos that any of you out there can provide.
